Description

For several years, the first saint project has been underway in the Roman Catholic Church in Estonia. The project is expected to culminate in 2025. Who are the saints in the Roman Catholic Church and how can the saints be our bridge to God is the subject of this lecture, which will be using the example of St. John Henry Newman. Newman was a saint whose life and path to holiness has been a great example to many and who has touched the hearts of many people through prayer.

John Henry Newman (1801–1890) was an English theologian, academic, philosopher, historian, writer and poet, first an Anglican priest and later a Catholic priest and cardinal, who was an important figure in the religious history of 19th century England. Cardinal Newman was canonised by Pope Francis on October 13, 2019, in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican. Arvo Pärt has composed the work Littlemore Tractus to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Newman’s birth.

Marge Paas is a Roman Catholic postulator and has been working on the Eduard Profittlich beatification project since 2017. Prior to this, she defended her PhD thesis “Empathy in Experiencing Works of Art: a Phenomenological Analysis”, which she wrote under the supervision of Tõnu Viik, at Tallinn University in spring 2017. In October 2019, Marge Paas also attended the canonisation of Cardinal John Henry Newman in the Vatican and witnessed this historic church event.

The lecture will be in Estonian.
