Description

Tõnu Kõrvits “Moon Atlas”
Joel Remmel Trio:
Joel Remmel (piano)
Heikko Remmel (double bass)
Ramuel Tafenau (percussion)

Tõnu Kõrvits‘ new piece “Moon Atlas”, composed specially for the Joel Remmel Trio, will be premiered at the Arvo Pärt Center during two concerts around the All Souls’ Day. The concerts on November 2 and 3 will take place within the residency program of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.

The composer himself describes the work written for the jazz trio as a musical atlas of the Moon: “Several places put in music actually exist on the Moon (Sea of Tranquility, Marsh of Sleep), while some exist only in music (River of Magic, Valleys of Melancholia). The last episode, Eldorado, was titled after a poem by Edgar Allan Poe:

…And, as his strength
Failed him at length,
He met a pilgrim shadow—
“Shadow,” said he,
“Where can it be—
This land of Eldorado?”

“Over the Mountains
Of the Moon,
Down the Valley of the Shadow,
Ride, boldly ride,”
The shade replied—
“If you seek for Eldorado!”

Joel Remmel (b. 1989) is one of the most outstanding pianists of the younger generation in Estonia on the jazz scene. As a pianist, he has collaborated with many Estonian musicians and collectives and received several prestigious music awards. Since 2011, he has been leading a trio under his own name. The Joel Remmel Trio (Joel Remmel on piano, Heikko Remmel on double bass and Ramuel Tafenau on percussion) has given numerous concerts and recorded seven albums of Nordic poetic originality. In 2021, the ensemble was awarded the title Jazz Ensemble of the Year, while a year later the album “Kevad” was chosen as the Jazz Album of the Year. Joel Remmel Trio has collaborated with various orchestras and participated in special projects of many jazz and pop musicians.

Tõnu Kõrvits (b. 1969) is one of Estonia’s most prominent composers. His music is characterized by a gentle atmosphere that clearly reflects the Nordic nature, interweaving romantic and impressionist influences. Kõrvitsa’s poetic and visionary works take the listener on a hypnotic journey through natural landscapes, folklore and the depths of the human soul and subconscious.
