Short description

The original version of Veni creator was scored for choir and organ and was written in 2006 to a commission from the German Bishops’ Conference. In 2009, Pärt revised the same musical material and arranged the organ part for string orchestra. The new version premiered in May 2010 at the composer's recital in Lublin, Poland, performed by Choir of the Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Cracow, Lublin Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Cem Mansur.

The work is based on two verses of one of the Roman Catholic church’s most important prayers, the pentecostal hymn “Veni, creator Spiritus”. It is short, bright and airy tintinnabuli composition, ending in a festive Amen-formula.

Vocal text

From the liturgical hymn “Veni creator”

Veni, creator Spiritus
mentes tuorum visita,
imple superna gratia,
quae tu creasti pectora.

Accende lumen sensibus,
infunde amorem cordibus,
infirma nostri corporis,
virtute firmans perpeti.

Amen.

Come, O Creator Spirit blest!
And in our souls take up Thy rest;
Come, with Thy grace and heavenly aid,
To fill the hearts which Thou hast made.

Kindle our senses from above,
And make our hearts o’erflow with love;
With patience firm, and virtue high,
the weakness of our flesh supply.

Amen.
