Habitare fratres in unum for a cappella choir (S, A/Ct, T, B) or vocal ensemble (S/Ct, A/Ct, T, B) was composed using Psalm 132 (133) in Church Slavonic. It is a pilgrim song of David in three verses, a blessing of brotherly unity. The text manifests itself in a calm and even choral sound, where no voice dominates over the others and where there are no climaxes or dynamic contrasts. This choral miniature is one of the few works by Pärt that has a thoroughly major-mode soundscape.
Arvo Pärt dedicated the piece to the long-standing music editor of Universal Edition, Józef Stanislaw Durek, who has prepared the composer’s works for publishing for over twenty years. The composition was premiered by Vox Clamantis in November 2012 in Paris at the Les Heures des Bern…
