Short description

Habitare fratres in unum for a cappella choir (S, A/Ct, T, B) or vocal ensemble (S/Ct, A/Ct, T, B) was composed using Psalm 132 (133) in Church Slavonic. It is a pilgrim song of David in three verses, a blessing of brotherly unity. The text manifests itself in a calm and even choral sound, where no voice dominates over the others and where there are no climaxes or dynamic contrasts. This choral miniature is one of the few works by Pärt that has a thoroughly major-mode soundscape.

Arvo Pärt dedicated the piece to the long-standing music editor of Universal Edition, Józef Stanislaw Durek, who has prepared the composer’s works for publishing for over twenty years. The composition was premiered by Vox Clamantis in November 2012 in Paris at the Les Heures des Bern…

Psalm 132 (133)

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;
As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.
